A Merry Racquets Court Christmas in Newcastle

The nights have started getting darker which can only mean one thing – Christmas is coming.

The North East is absolutely bursting with festive fun so we have compiled a list of some of our favourite things to in the build-up to Christmas.

1) Fenwick’s Window

We couldn’t do a Christmas list without including this local gem. Less than a 2-minute walk from our very own offices is the legendary Fenwick’s Window. Each year they create a theme for their windows facing onto Northumberland Street in Newcastle city centre. Past themes have included The Snowman, The Night Before Christmas and A Christmas Carol (see more here) In 2018, Greggs managed to sneak their way into the picture by reversing their logo so when the window was revealed, their logo was reflected back at the spectators.

The window was revealed on 1st November and will be available to see until 31st December.

2) The Festive Bake

Speaking of Greggs, there is no greater joy than taking a break from Christmas shopping for one of their Festive Bakes. If you’re anything like me, you’ll also have stockpiled the frozen ones available from Iceland.

3) Newcastle Christmas Lights Switch On

As with most cities and towns, Newcastle likes to go all out with its festive lights. The official switch-on was 7th November 2019 by award-winning musician, Sam Fender with festive songs, entertainment from the cast of Aladdin at the Tyne Theatre and general Christmas fun.

4) Coca Cola Truck Tour

I think we all know about this icon truck. The advert first came out in 1995 and since then, it has become a Christmas must-see for many of us. The truck starts in Glasgow in early November and visits around 24 locations on its way down to London in time for Christmas.

It usually stops in Newcastle but dates are still TBC. Keep an eye on their website for more information.

5) Centre for Life Ice Skating

Who hasn’t put on a pair of skates and made a fool of themselves on the ice? This kicks off on 9th November until 5th January at Centre for Life and is an outdoor ice rink suitable for the whole family (just make sure to wrap up warm!)

6) Newcastle Christmas Market

The local and international markets get together for a month from 16th November and bring us the Newcastle Christmas Market. Just a wander between the stalls is enough to give you that festive buzz and you can pick up some gorgeous gifts for your loved ones, and yourself!

7) Panto Time!

We’re really lucky when it comes to Panto. With so many to choose from, you can’t really get it wrong. Theatre Royal in Newcastle city centre, Sunderland Empire,  Northern Stage also in the city centre, Playhouse Whitley Bay and The Exchange in North Sheilds are just some of the locations we have to choose from….oh yes they are! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist)

8) The Alnwick Gardens Winter Light Trail

I have to say, this is one of my family’s favourite festive activities. Up in Northumberland, you can go and experience this stunning light trail through The Alnwick Gardens. Last year we saw some life-size gingerbread men, and a cheeky, Geordie snowman so we can’t wait to see what they have this year.

9) Christmas at the Cathedral

North East celebrities and special guests get together to raise money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, a charity to support more effective ways to detect and treat cancer. Held at St Nicholas’ Cathedral on 19th December, Christmas at the Cathedral definitely deserves a place on our list.

10) Dine by the Tyne Festive Igloos

Last year Dine by the Tyne was on they Gateshead Quayside but this year they will be found on the Newcastle side of the river. These custom-built pods will have stunning views of the Millennium and The Tyne Bridge. This is a great private Christmas dining event with a three-course seasonal meal and drinks.

Merry Christmas
